When Should You Consider Contact Lenses?
Almost anyone can benefit from wearing contact lenses. Whether you’re looking to correct specific vision problems or just want more variety in your eyewear choices, contacts can help.
Even if you’re interested in lenses, our team must ensure that you can wear them comfortably and safely. Certain eye conditions can make your eyes “hard-to-fit,” which may limit your options for certain types of contacts.
We determine the right type of contact lenses for you by performing a comprehensive exam and fitting.
The Contact Lens Exam & Fitting Process
Before we prescribe contact lenses, we perform a full contact lens exam and fitting. This process helps us evaluate your vision needs, eye health, and how well your eyes adjust to lenses. In some cases, we may recommend a specialty lens to address a unique condition.
Even if you already wear contacts, regular exams are important to ensure your lenses continue to meet your needs comfortably and safely.
The first step in the contact lens process is the eye exam. During this exam, we evaluate your eye health and determine your lens prescription.
Some conditions may affect your lens choice or overall candidacy, including:
- Dry eye
- Frequent eye infections
- Living in dusty, dirty, or smoky environments
Using this information, we can find lenses that meet your vision needs and lifestyle.
After the exam, we begin the fitting process. This includes assessing tear film quality, checking corneal health, and measuring corneal parameters to ensure your lenses fit well and provide clear vision.
The trial starts as soon as we select the right lenses for you. Our team will show you proper lens care and how to insert and remove your contacts. Your eyes may need a few days to adjust, and we will schedule a follow-up to confirm comfort and clarity.
By the end of the process, you should be fully satisfied with the comfort, fit, and vision your contact lenses provide.

Types of Contact Lenses We Offer
Our selection can help correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, or address presbyopia and myopia development. We’ll recommend the right lens for you after your exam and fitting:
- Monovision: Designed for presbyopia, monovision lenses use a different prescription in each eye—one for close vision, one for distance. Your eyes work together to provide clear, balanced vision.
- Multifocals: Multifocal lenses correct presbyopia and can help manage myopia development. Studies show they can slow myopia progression in children effectively.
- Toric lenses: Specialty lenses for astigmatism, toric contacts have a unique shape and weight to prevent rotation, ensuring consistent vision throughout the day.
- Bandage contacts: Protect your cornea while it heals after surgery or injury. Bandage lenses provide comfort and support during recovery.
If you have questions about which lens type is right for you, our team is ready to help.
Our In-House Specialty Lenses
Wake Forest Eye Care Center also offers specialty lenses to address unique eye and vision conditions. Our team will help determine which lens is best suited for your needs:
- Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) lenses: Made from durable plastics that allow oxygen to reach your eyes, RGP lenses can relieve symptoms of dry eye and provide sharp, stable vision. Some patients find them easier to handle than soft lenses, though adaptation may take a few days.
- Scleral lenses: Larger than traditional lenses, scleral lenses vault over the cornea to provide comfort and clarity for irregular corneas. They are ideal for patients with conditions like keratoconus or severe dry eye syndrome.
Specialty lenses are customized for your eyes to help ensure optimal vision, comfort, and eye health. Contact our team to learn more about which lenses can best support your sight.
