Find Out if Laser Eye Surgery Is Right for You
Clearer vision can make daily activities, work, and life in general more enjoyable. While glasses and contacts are excellent options, some may want to look for a solution that reduces dependence on corrective lenses.
During a laser eye surgery consultation, our team will evaluate your eyes, review your vision goals, and guide you through the options that may be a good fit for your needs.
We focus on personalized care and co-manage your journey with trusted ophthalmologists to help ensure the best results. Take the first step toward clearer vision by booking a consultation with our team today.

Getting Started with a Consultation
Laser eye surgery is a popular option for achieving clearer vision, but a consultation is essential before any procedure. During your consultation, we evaluate your eyes and overall health to determine your candidacy and the type of procedure that may be best suited to your needs.
While laser surgery doesn’t guarantee perfect 20/20 vision, most patients achieve 20/40 vision or better. Some may still need prescription lenses for the sharpest vision possible.
Determining Your Candidacy
Most patients can safely undergo laser eye surgery, but certain factors may influence which procedure is right for you, including:
- Dry eye disease
- Eye disease
- Frequent eye infections
- Large pupils
- Thin corneas
- High prescriptions
Co-Managing Your Recovery
We work closely with your ophthalmologist to co-manage your recovery and help minimize side effects. Common temporary side effects may include:
- Dry eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Glare or halos
- Blurry vision
- Irritation or general discomfort
We also schedule follow-ups to monitor the progress of the healing process.

Types of Laser Eye Surgeries
There are several types of laser eye surgeries, each designed to address specific vision issues. At Wake Forest Eye Care Center, we provide thorough consultations and co-manage procedures that focus on correcting refractive errors and treating cataracts.
Once we determine your candidacy and the procedure that may best meet your needs, we will refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist to perform the surgery. Afterward, we schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery, manage any side effects, and ensure your vision improves safely and comfortably.
Refractive surgeries help correct issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, mostly by changing the shape of your cornea.
The 2 most common refractive surgeries are LASIK and PRK, both of which change the shape of your corneal tissue using an excimer laser. There is only a small difference between the surgeries:
- During LASIK, your surgeon creates a small flap from your cornea’s outermost layer to get access to the underlying tissue.
- During PRK, your surgeon removes a small area of your cornea’s outermost layer to get access to the underlying tissue. The layer grows back over a few weeks.
We may recommend PRK surgery over LASIK if you have thinner corneas.
Cataract surgery is a common procedure, and it’s the only way to clear your vision from cataracts permanently.
During the surgery, your ophthalmologist will make a small incision on the edge of your cornea to get access to your cataract lens. They will then break up the cataract, allowing them to extract it. They replace the cataract lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), restoring your clear vision.
YAG surgery, also known as posterior capsulotomy, is a procedure you may need to have a few months after cataract surgery.
The IOL that replaces your cataract lens is held in the lens capsule. A few months after you have cataract surgery, the lens capsule may start to become cloudy or wrinkled, causing a “secondary cataract.”
During YAG surgery, your surgeon can create a small hole in the lens capsule, making it easier for light to pass through and reach your retina.
